Todah (תּוֹדָה) is the most common Hebrew noun used in the bible for “thanks” It derives from the verb, “Yadah (יָדָה) which means “to praise, confess.” *
I don’t intend to write a theological article on the act of offering thanks to God, however; I find the Hebrew word reference interesting. Gratitude is a subject very close to my heart. It helped me get through a terrible time of depression, which is why time and again I like to pen posts on what I’m thankful for. Even the most mundane comforts are a reason to give thanks.
To me, saying thank-you to God is a type of worship. While worry has you meditate on your problems, worship has you meditate on your problem solver. Any form of worship including thanksgiving has the potential to shift your mental focus, which is essential when you are depressed. When you are chronically stuck in dark thought patterns, even temporary relief from the emotional drain can be a lifesaver.
Today I’d like to list 10 bible verses on Thanksgiving. As you meditate on them, I hope you can find things to be thankful for.
Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us be thankful, through which let us serve God acceptably, with awe and reverence.
