10 great scriptures on gratitude to be thankful for

Todah (תּוֹדָה) is the most common Hebrew noun used in the bible for “thanks” It derives from the verb, “Yadah (יָדָה) which means “to praise, confess.” *

I don’t intend to write a theological article on the act of offering thanks to God, however; I find the Hebrew word reference interesting. Gratitude is a subject very close to my heart. It helped me get through a terrible time of depression, which is why time and again I like to pen posts on what I’m thankful for. Even the most mundane comforts are a reason to give thanks.

To me, saying thank-you to God is a type of worship. While worry has you meditate on your problems, worship has you meditate on your problem solver. Any form of worship including thanksgiving has the potential to shift your mental focus, which is essential when you are depressed. When you are chronically stuck in dark thought patterns, even temporary relief from the emotional drain can be a lifesaver.

Today I’d like to list 10 bible verses on Thanksgiving.  As you meditate on them, I hope you can find things to be thankful for.

Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom, let us be thankful, through which let us serve God acceptably, with awe and reverence.

(Hebrews 12:28 LEB)

Let Christ’s message fully live in you. In every wise way teach and instruct one another through psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing praises to God in gratitude and sincerity.

(Colossians 3:16 FBV)

Don’t worry about anything, but take everything to God in prayer, explaining your requests to him and thanking him for all he does.

(Philippians 3:6 FBV)

So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes above and said, “Father, I give thanks to you that you hear me.”

(John 11:41 LEB)

I will offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to you and I will worship you.

(Psalm 116:17 FBV)

Always thank God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

(Ephesians 5:20 FBV)

Therefore, I urge first of all that petitions, prayers, requests, and thanksgiving be made on behalf of all people

(1 Timothy 2: 1 LEB)

It’s all for you! As God’s grace reaches many more, thankfulness to God will be even greater, to his glory.

(2 Corinthians 4:15 FBV)

Be thankful in every situation—because this is what God in Christ Jesus wants you to do.

(Psalm 107:1 FBV)

  1. Lovely post. I especially like this, “While worry has you meditate on your problems, worship has you meditate on your problem solver.”
